Ways to stay active in the winter

Sticking to a fitness routine in the winter is just downright hard (trust me, I know, I lived in Michigan). Even if you have a gym membership, forcing yourself out into the cold to get a workout in can feel impossible. But staying active during the winter months does not have to be complicated. There are plenty of effective ways to move your body at home with minimal or no equipment. These small habits can help you stay consistent with your fitness goals even when the temperature drops.

1. Try Free YouTube Workout Videos

One of the easiest ways to stay active in the winter is by using free YouTube workout videos. There are thousands of workouts available including dance, yoga, strength training, pilates, low impact cardio, HIIT and more. Guided videos make it simple to follow along and get a great workout at home without spending a dime. This is perfect if you want variety or struggle with motivation during the cold season. I've tried some of those dance videos and they can really get your heart rate up!

2. Go for Walks Indoors or Outdoors

Walking is one of the most underrated winter workouts. If you have the space, an inexpensive walking pad or treadmill from Amazon can be a game changer. I know a lot of people hate walking on treadmills, but I have developed a new love for walking on my incline walking pad while watching a show on TV. Twenty or thirty minutes goes by so fast when you are distracted by your favorite series.

If you are willing to brave the cold, outdoor walking or running can also be refreshing, especially if you live in a climate where winter temperatures are mild. Either way, walking is an easy and effective way to stay active during winter.

3. Use the Stairs in Your Home

If you have a staircase in your house, you basically have a built in stair climber. Walking up and down the stairs increases your heart rate and strengthens your legs and glutes. It is a simple winter workout that requires zero equipment and can be done in short bursts throughout the day. Just be mindful of your footing and pace yourself.

4. Find an Indoor Walking Area

If you work in a large building, take advantage of the space. Use part of your lunch break to walk the hallways and get your steps in. Another great option is your local mall. Mall walking is a tried and true winter fitness habit and gives you a warm, safe place to move when it is freezing outside.

5. Join a Gym If It Works for You

If you are comfortable going to a gym and can afford a membership, winter is a great time to use it. Many gyms have extended hours and plenty of equipment options, which makes it easier to fit exercise into your schedule. Just make sure you are committing to a routine that feels realistic for you, since many gym memberships require a contract and commitment to having your membership a certain number of months.

Staying Active in Winter Takes Consistency

Believe me, I struggle with motivation in the winter too, and I do not even have to leave my house to work out. Something about the colder temperatures, darker evenings and slower days makes it so tempting to stay curled up on the couch. But staying active in the winter is all about consistency and building small habits.

Every bit of movement counts. Find what works for you, stay flexible and remember that you do not need perfect workouts, just consistent ones.
